In August of 2014, Jack and Donna Walton again visited Rosalia and the Amigos' Scholarship students in Apaseo. The Waltons were joined by Jim and Lydia Stack, and by Dan Early. They provided the following summary information regarding each of the twelve students:
Jose Alfredo: He will graduate after this semester from the University of Queretaro in engineering, and is looking forward to joining former scholarship student, Gustavo, as an engineer at one of the big manufacturing companies in the region.
Cecilia: In eighteen months Cecilia will graduate from the Tecnologico de Celaya. She is majoring in enviornmental engineering and working with a professor doing research on biological control of insects. She dreams of getting an advanced degree - this would be a first for an O'Looney Scholarship student.
Esperanza: She is finishing her last year at the Tecnologico de Celaya, studying genetic engineering. For her semester of social service, she researched how to grow agricultural crops that are more productive and more effective. She would also like to pursue a master's degree and do research. She knows she would have more opportunities to do this if she could improve her English. She would like to be able to study English in the U.S. if at all possible.
Ana Lilia: She continues to overcome the disability of her blindness and is now finishing a year's course to become a massuese. She has plans to earn money for her family and enroll in voice classes; she sings beautifully.
Brenda: She has finished her 1st semester at the Tecnologico de Celeya and is studying human resources, especially workplace and labor issues. She is also the unofficial secretary of the Amigos' scholarship group.
Erik: He graduated from "preparatorio" and has begun studying robotics at the Tecnologico de Celaya. He plays soccer and chess, and has won a chess tournament recently.
Denis: She received her elementary education in Atlanta, Georgia, but attended middle school and high school in Apaseo. She is studying English at the Tecnologico de Celaya and is completing the 9th semester (of a total of 10). She will receive a certificate for this study. She is not yet sure of her career, but knows it will involve languages.
Raul: he is in his first semester of industrial engineering at the Tecnologico of Celaya. Raul has a good command of English and he hs become Rosalia's assistant, translating for her and handling her communications with the Amigos' Board.
Sarai: She has been studying physical therapy but the program was discontinued due to insufficient enrollment. She is now studying industrial engineering in manufacturing at an online university of Apaseo. Rosalia commented that others students who have completed the online courses have gotten jobs.
Jose Angel: He is in the second year of secundaria, or middle schol in Apaseo. Last year he had an excellent teacher who really worked with him to improve his skills. He is Denis' brother and also started his education in Atlanta. He is working to improve his English and last year he helped the English teacher with the other students in his class.
Jose Luis: He is in the first semester of middle school. He plays the cornet in the school band and his band won 1st place in a national competition in Queretaro.
Ximena: She is our newest scholarship recipient. She is focused on math. Ever since her brother, Ernesto, was in the program, she has wnated to enter it. She really looks forward to the monthly meetings of the group, and knows she will really learn a lot from the older students.
